4th Day: in Legnano only Italian salad for food... Errigo finishes with a bronze.

LEGNANO – 4th DAY, June 18th, 2012

Step by step Italy finally arrived too. Arrianna Errigo, 24, from Muggiò, gives Italy the first medal, only in the 4th day, just a bronze. And immediately after her defeat she cracks a joke: “I collect medals, but never a gold... Today another one, sooner or later it will arrive!”. And the most important date still has to come, anyway. Italy leaves the title after three edition, after the golds named Vezzali (2009 and 2010) and Di Francisca (2011).

The strong Russian team is impressive, great in each weapon, men or women, it doesn't matter. Also yesterday golds were only their business, even with an hat trick in women's foil and Sukhov's victory in men's epee. In the European Medal Book, Russia reaches 6 golds, four times out of four in the last two day.It was the same last year in Sheffield for Italy. It last only two day at the end.

A little bit of luck and skill in the preliminary heat for Russian girl, with four athlete placed in different qualifying heats of the board. Only one derby in the quarterfinal between Deriglazova and Shanaeva made them lose a pretender to the throne. Not the same for Italy, with Di Francisca who won against Salvatori (15-7) in the qualifying, and Errigo vs Vezzali (15-6) in the quarterfinal. Out unexpectedly Vezzali, only 7th at the end, down 5-9 before against the Hungarian Mohamed. Valentina touched her break-even point, 11-11, a few second to the end of the regoular time. Then with a positive draw, she scored the last touch.

Out early also other great athlets like the Italian Elisa Di Francisca, Caroline Golubytskyi (Germany), Varga and Knapek (Hungary). In the castle, for the last matches, Errigo and Deriglazova fenced a difficult bout, hard-fought, tight, on edge, finished at the last touch. Errigo ahead 4-1, then Deriglazova up 10-6, then again the Italian good recovery, in front of her crowd, and at last, a Russian happy ending.

In the final all Russian, Deriglazova, 22, 12th in Catania World Championships, beat Gafurzianova, clearly, 15-8.

In men's epee, the victory goes to the Russian Sukhov over the Estonian Novosjolov for 15-12. The best Italian was Paolo Pizzo, 6th, loser in the quarterfinal just beaten 15-11 by the new European Champion. Out against Pizzo, other two favourites: the Hungarian Imre and the Swiss Kauter (15-14). Stop in the qualifying for Diego Confalonieri, 15-11 against Karuchenko, and Matteo Tagliariol, beaten by The Swiss Heinzer for 15-10. "I'm really sorry, obviously - Tagliariol said - but my sensations are pretty good. I couldn't fence a lot, this year because of my hand-pain, so I couldn't be on the top".

Today is the penultimate day with men's foil and women's sabre team.
